Petersen stands as a towering figure, a master of modern art who has captivated audiences with his masterful synthesis of gestural abstract expressionism, painterly realism, and advanced color theory. The Beginning

Born in Endelave, Denmark, in 1926, Petersen’s artistic journey began at an early age. His passion for art led him to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley, followed by a Master of Arts degree from the San Francisco Art Institute. In 1950, he embarked on a pivotal step in his artistic development, traveling to Provincetown, Massachusetts, to study with the renowned abstract expressionist painter Hans Hofmann.

Expressionism

Hofmann’s influence on Petersen’s work was profound, shaping his understanding of color, form, and composition. Petersen embraced the expressive energy of abstract expressionism while also incorporating elements of figuration and landscape, reflecting the influence of the Bay Area Figurative Movement. This movement, which emerged in the 1950s, marked a return to figuration in painting, challenging the dominance of abstract expressionism.

Petersen’s paintings often depict scenes of everyday life, capturing the essence of human interaction and the beauty of the natural world. His “Picnic” series, a collection of paintings documenting annual gatherings at UC Davis, is a testament to his ability to capture the essence of a moment, imbuing it with a sense of joy and vitality.
