Artist Bio

Will Crane was born May 27th, 1968 and grew up as a child in Brewton, Alabama. He collected comic books and made frequent trips to the library looking at art books. Here he discovered Salvador Dali and Rene Magritte. These artists would have a lasting effect on Crane’s developing visual vocabulary. Time passed, and other surrealists influenced his work, R. K. Sloane and Naoto Hattori. They reflected a darker side to art and a craftsmanship to small work that he had never seen before. Crane’s vocabulary ranges from mysterious to charming, juxtaposing commonplace and disturbing, creating a subtle uneasiness in the viewer. Crane’s paintings are full of contrasting images that seem to fit together only in a dreamer’s paradise. I work in acrylic and graphite and consider my work surreal or pop surreal.
